Julian Alaphilippe is at it again. The Frenchman took yellow a stage earlier this year than last - it took him until stage 3 in - but the week ahead looks favorable for a long defense.

Can he do it? Do we need to become Alabelievers, once again? Last summer my partner and I stumbled upon a bag of chain wax at the Wabi Sabi in Moab.

Thinking we had just unlocked the cheat code, we vowed to wax our chains religiously. As in, 4 chains broken last summer sucks. Learning from past events, I would not recommend waxing your chain religiously, or really at all.

It would be sweet to be able to use gas station compressors as well. I guess I just like the look of presta, and have had pretty good luck seating tires.

Noticeable especially when using a small pump trailside. I remove the valve, seat the bead, add sealant, replace the valve then pump to desired pressure.

Way easier with Schrader. N : I think that's why they've stuck around. People associate them with high end bikes so they must be better right?

But you asked if there's any reason we still use presta instead of schraeder, and inflating with a hand pump trailside is the big reason that everyone likes to ignore when advocating for schraeder.

It's also more convenient to air down a tire with presta, but that's a fairly trivial difference. But fortunately you have the option of drilling your rims and using schraeder valves.

Presta's are more restrictive especially when you remove the core. It takes more pressure to open up a Schrader but the volume is potentially greater.

Presta's are better for narrower rims as the weak spot created by the hole in the rim is smaller. Take the cap and cut it half, just above the step down in the taper.

Open up your Presta Valve. Flip the cut Cap upside down and thread it onto your Presta stem. It works best with a locking Pump Head but will also work with a gas station type press on head.

You just have to hold it very firmly. Not a perfect solution but if you don't have an adapter it'll get you out of a jam.

Good one. Ok, so use schraeder valves then Augustus-G : good advice! I've used that technique, with varied success, but it's definitely good in a pinch!

Augustus-G : yes, presta was the solution for narrowing road rims in the early years of less weight above all else.

But now that rims are wider and made from stronger materials, the cons far outweigh any benefits. I don't know why people still put up with them. Everyone else, besides you and lezyne apparently, have also realized that pumps that thread onto the valve suck and have stopped using them, and then accidentally unthreading the valvecore is no longer an issue.

They're both valves. They both work. They both have subtle advantages and disadvantages. If you struggle to use either kind of valve then it's probably a personal problem.

Whenever someone brings this up they act like they've had some revelation that everyone else is too dumb to see.

And for some reason, they have to try to convince all the people that just don't give a shit and use presta because they work fine and it's the industry standard, that schraeder is vastly superior and they're being duped by the industry.

If you care so much, just drill your rims and use tubeless schraeder valves, and move on with your life.

Nobody cares. I have a Topeak multi-tool and it fits right in the middle of it. My comments are perfectly reasonable given the subject article.

Let me try a different tack. Let's say you weren't the obvious MTB God that you are and had some issues with presta like a lot of us lowly joeys.

That's a pretty low bar. I'm not hung up on anything, but you asked a question, I answered it objectively, but you don't like the answer. I'd probably choose option C But, here's a question for you, if you're so convinced that schraeder is superior, why haven't you switched already?

Presta valves seem significantly easier to get air into that Schrader. They allow more air in and the pump doesn't need to be positioned just perfect to press the spring loaded valve down.

If we switched to Schrader, everyone would be bitching about the changing standards and having to replace everything that uses Presta. Not sure what is cooler, the AWD fatbike, or the woman riding it.

If your career is so dependent on such an organizer and you've got so little input, you'd best either have a backup plan or choose a different career altogether.

That said, sports always has this role model function for the youth. Especially sports events broadcasted across the world. So there you have this prestigious big sports event where the lads ride the bikes and the lasses kiss the winner.

It definitely leaves an impression on eight year olds of what they can become, based on what they are now. So it isn't that much about what the athletes and hostesses want to do with their lives but more to ditch the single-sided impression the kids are getting.

Have your local grassroots event and do what you want, but once it goes on the telly it definitely takes a bit more responsibility.

If you are good at singing, writing stories or articles, making music, playing a sport, organising people, helping people, selling things, buying things, making things.

There are many talents that people have. Of course, the organisers can do what they want. I reject the idea that having girls up there is damaging to anyone or anything.

I bet if you asked all the fans of any sport, a clear majority would be happy to keep seeing hot girls holding umbrellas or whatever. If my daughter did it, would I have a problem with it?

The deal here is that with, what could be considered the premier event for this road cycling sports, the way you can participate in it depends on your sex.

If you're a guy, you can aspire to race the event. If you're a girl and want to be involved, you can become a hostess. It is this strict differentiation that hurts there.

I'd say it would go much less for BMX racing and enduro mtb racing if it would be like the winner would be kissed exclusively by women.

Apparently they haven't managed to realize that. So yeah, to not highlight this strict differentiation of roles at the event, I can get into their decision to at least not make the host role a strictly female affair.

I don't care much about F1 car racing though as far as I understand, it also happens to be a bit of a sausage fest at the moment. In F3 etc women are competing but not quite so in F1.

I guess my whole beef with the whole woke thing is the insistence of complaining woke crusaders to change existing institutions that most people are fine with, rather than instituting their own institutions.

For example if I wanted to see more males wearing makeup, I think a better way to do do that would be to start my own institution based on men wearing makeup.

Just about role patterns, any role pattern. I'm not saying the women should race in the same field as the mens. They may have sections of the course changed like the women typically have a different second straight in BMX racing but if the TdF is such a high profile event, women competing in their own edition would benefit from it too.

As far as I know, there is no womens event so as such I think it would be unfortunate to have another role at the same event to be exclusively performed by women.

I just don't like role patters based on what people are. If you have a full top level basketball competition of tall black men who let's say just happen to be best at that game, by all means don't have a crew of short white women sweeping the floor during the breaks.

If the competition is single sided, don't have other roles in the same event single sided too. Now I don't think my example of the basketball competition is a current one, just meant to think up an example outside the sex differentiation.

Again same goes for F1 car racing. If these can only find good male drivers then well, it is as it is. Just saying that if it is like that then the organizing body should try to avoid other strict role patterns if they're not that essential.

On a side note, I'd be curious whether in car sports where, unlike MX, you don't quite need to muscle a machine around, women could possibly perform on the same level.

After all in fighter jets women can actually perform on the same or even on a better level as men because they typically cope better with G-forces so I don't quite see how this can't be the case in cars.

But again, I'm not really into F1 racing so I'm way out of my depth there. Back to these hostesses in road cycling.

They're getting money so that's good for them. I'm not at any point stating it isn't. Some people apparently enjoy looking at them so that makes it a plus for them too.

Young girls watching the event cannot recognize themselves in the athletes and the only role they see for ladies is as hostess.

So that sure puts of a good couple of them to become a racer, which is a shame. Obviously most athletes in most sports do some kind of model work even if it is just for their clothing sponsor, so a guy passionate about becoming a model still sees that as a possibilty.

My opinion here is formed quite recently on this initiative by Elliot Jackson. I never realized it, but apparently some black kids drop the aspiration to become mountainbike racers because they see no role models in the current competition.

Seeing their role models abundantly in an alternative scene only reinforces that. I can imagine the same goes for girls, dropping the aspiration to become top level cyclists.

So yeah, between the hostesses, the people enjoying to see the hostesses and the young girls following their dreams, I'd choose for the young girls following their dreams.

Sorry for the hostesses losing their job indeed. But if you consciously choose to make a living off being a public figure, then in part your profession is going to be affected by the needs of this very public.

Aside from all the other arguments, this seems reason enough to just do away with it. I mean, why do we need to be congratulated by big tiddy ladies, other than to appease ego.

If you're looking for titillation at the end of the Tdf, i'd argue you're watching the wrong channel. The guys are wealthy, and pretty much gods in half of the world.

There are tails of girls swapping with others because they like a rider in the green jersey or whatever.

It is essentially 'a bit of totty' for the blokes, if you'd excuse the expression. That's the easy part. To counter this, i couldn't disagree that it is a woman's right to choose to be objectified.

If they are happy with the role and happier still getting paid to do it, who are we to tell them they shouldn't be.

To muddy the waters further though Proceedings would carry on just as effectivley were it not a part of the sport.

As i said above, i respect a person's choice to do this job. But the validity of the role also has to be weighed up against any negative images it may be perpetuating.

I don't have a conclusion as to whether it's right or wrong and i'm not trying to speak on anyone's behalf, just pointing out what i think are things that need to be considered.

Know a guy who's worked for Shimano and he said they love having SRAM as a competitor since they are actually pushing Shimano to innovate and make stuff in the race to keep up.

Tr : Shimano is infamous for working on products for a long time before releasing, which does speak in a different way to a large design budget.

The opposite would be rushing an idea to market because you need to start getting a return on it instead of investing more in development and testing.

Well engineered products released later than the competition. The only question becomes whether you can hold out long enough for them to actually deliver their next product.

And they don't need chintzy eagle grafix to sell, because it works flawlessly and is superior to the competition except for Shimano's recent brakes; those could use some work.

Same with 12spd. SRAM: build hype, rush to market, fix it later. Another reason Shimano took so long is because they couldnt get their cranks right.

Sure, they could have just slapped a new chainring on some old cranks which they did have to do to fill some OE orders for a month , but instead they pushed the public release date back so that everything was perfect when it went to market.

SRAM was built on the smoldering carcass of the venerable Sachs! It was to have the right combo of range and steps between gears to convince the mainstream user to ditch the dreaded front mech.

You can say what you want about shift quality but we would have waited so much longer for 1x to become the standard and not a mod on trailbikes if it wasn't for SRAM's 11sp.

And even then, some were saying the range was a compromise not that I agree but the fact remains that opinion was common , so 12sp upped the range to exactly what front mech drivertains offered and put the last nail in that coffin.

Even earlier with 10sp, quality arguments aside, SRAM were the ones who introduced it and immediately went from 3x to 2x.

Shimano followed because they had to, but misunderstood the point so badly that they offered those utterly stupid 3x10 drivetrains. Hell, even with 11sp Shimano kept clinging to the front derailleur which was absurd and showed how out of touch with riders' needs they were.

Shimano make incredibly good quality, reliable, precise stuff but for some time now they've been a follower and not a leader in reading the market.

And maybe for the better because last time they innovated, we got Dual Control, Airlines and Rapid Rise Rapid Rise, mtb brifters, their 11speed cassette, their variable bite point brakes, their original 1x chainring that didn't work at all, they've had issues with cranks breaking recently, wired di2 does anyone even run this?

They have stopped innovating, they do the absolute bare minimum to stay relevant. Same issues with the brakes, random bite point, leaky pistons, noisy brake pads.

It looks like that hub could be the best of both worlds. Keep up the real innovations! Yeah, it might be great, in theory.

I have had 10 times more issues with the Shimano group bike, brake issues, shifting issues. Only issues I am running into is that the Shimano doesn't upshift like a dream like people swear it does.

It does downshift better though Sram upshifts better, but doesn't downshift as well. Other than that, both my 12 speed systems have been working well.

I've only had to use a compressor a handful of times, but lighter tires are much more difficult to seat. I dunno about y'all but last time I replaced valve stems it was because they were full of sealant, which unless I missed something the titanium would do nothing for?

PAmtbiker Jul 20, at A buddy of mine does the hot chain wax thing and claims that it works great. He has 2 chains and just swaps them every month to clean and re-wax them.

I've never heard his chain squeak, so it must work I use two pots. One put water in, then a smaller one to put in the pot of water.

Chain and wax goes in the inner pot inner pot was from a rice cooker I found next to a dumpster. Water regulates the temperature. Definitely works great.

Pain in the ass though. Just came here to say that I bought one of those OG bontrager flash charger pumps back in when they came out and it's still going strong.

All you people that love tearing into Sram should give it a rest. You try making innovative bike parts that need to satisfy one of the biggest and most diverse user group of tech nerds on the planet.

Good luck keeping up with that. But when Shimano forced everyone to shift with the finger that absolutely needed to be on the brakes and Sram had a better option was it for me.

That and many things like it are the result of a company being made up of bike riders of all kinds in the country that invented the sport of mountain biking.

SRAM has great innovation. What they seem to lack is building products designed to last. Humans produce a lot of junk.

You just have to decide which junk you like. Speak with your money. Get smarter. Would you be happier if you were still riding with a front deraileur and a dropper you could barely reach?

Almost all of the fork brands make creaky steerers. Most brake brands offer failures of some kind. You can and will be able to buy parts for either system for as long as you need.
